Samite

YouTubeA brilliant and inspiring musician, Samite takes audiences back to his homeland in Africa with melodic and sensual sounds played on flute, kalimba and litungu. He sings in a bright, sweet tenor; accompanied by his extended family of thumb pianos and percussion instruments that have come to him at different points during his travels. Samite has performed in a broad variety of venues throughout the county and his music is enjoyed regularly by radio listeners nationwide.

On Ensemble

YouTubeWith the powerful rhythms of ensemble taiko music as its foundation, the On Ensemble combines musical and dance talents of its four members into unique and provocative performances. 

Using traditional drums, and other instruments, the members of On Ensemble present traditional drumming as well as contemporary sounds.

Ancient Grooves

YouTubeAncient Grooves is a uniquely versatile ensemble of master musicians performing on musical instruments from around the world. The magic of the ensemble comes from the dazzling expertise and knowledge of its world acclaimed musicians. Each member brings to the ensemble an amazing array of skills, rare and exotic instruments, historic knowledge, musicianship and their personal stories and love of indigenous music to the concert stage.

Judy Piazza

YouTubeJudy Piazza has been exploring music and sound for over 30 years as a performer, educator, music therapist, songwriter and recording artist. She has been deeply inspired and influenced by Glen Velez, Russill Paul, and Ubaka Hill, and has shared the stage with many acclaimed musicians including Paul Winter, Allessandra Belloni, and Gordy Ryan.Playing drums from around the world, Judy delves into the nature and use of rhythm and sound and how it relates to self, others and to our earth. She will be joined by an ensemble of talented musicians that will create sonorous soundscapes and rhythmsongs.

Martin Espino – Making Ancient Bamboo Flutes Music Workshop for Students. Martin Espino is one of the masters of leading workshops with children. In this workshop, students will be making an ancient style bamboo flute of the indigenous cultures of Mexico. Everyone will be sanding, decorating and playing his or her own personal flute to keep at then end of the session.  Come prepared to work, play, laugh and make music with Martin the Master.  Teachers – classes and number of students are limited, so please inquire for group reservations. $12

Judy Piazza - Rhythms Around the World. An interactive experience of indigenous rhythms, songs and sounds from cultures across the globe! Judy will demonstrate playing styles and instruments such as frame drums and goblet drums from many parts ofour earth, didjeridu, vocal styles, and native flutes. Then we'll all play from our own indigenous selves, focusing on frame drums with and without jingles. Drums will be available for your use (or bring your own!). On Ensemble –The Art of Taiko Music WorkshopMembers of the ground-breaking taiko quartet, On Ensemble, facilitate a hands-on exploration of taiko. Open to participants of all ages, the workshop provides insider details on the instruments and artform, teaches the traditional rhythm-learning system of kuchishouga, and gives participants a rare chance to try playing the drums. $15.

Malik Sow – West African Drumming Traditions Music Workshop Master Senegalese drummer, Malik Sow, offers lessons in West African drumming covering traditional rhythms and proper playing technique with djiembe, djun-djun, sabar, shakere and bells.  Malik will help you understand the art of West African drumming and guide you to experience the beauty and power of ‘the drum’.  Please bring your own drums or West African percussion to this workshop. $15.

Samite - The Healing Power of Music – Music Workshop In this workshop, Samite will share how music has been used to help people resolve deep emotional pain in Bukavo, Congo and Kampala, Uganda.  Attendees will experience the healing power of music through first person accounts of victims from these war torn countries. Samite will lead participants of the workshop in a musical narration of their own stories. $15.

Known as a multi-instrumentalist and singer, Samite has been heard world-wide at festivals and on the radio. One of the things people don’t know about Samite is that he is an accomplished and sensitive photographer. Samite will open the festival with a very special program combining music and original photographs of gorillas to highlight the perilous situation of these magnificent animals.  The program will be educational, entertaining and moving and will be a fund-raiser for Ojai’s World Music Festival.

gorillaThe event includes H’ordeurves and wine and will be held at “Heaven,” the legendary home of Larry Hagman, 9950 Sulphur Mountain Road in the Upper Ojai. The event has limited seating - make your reservations early. Due to limited parking, we recommend car-pooling as well as comfortable walking shoes.  Be sure to arrive by 6:30 so you can take in the sunset and beautiful views.

Join local performer Judy Piazza and Mounira for a Sunday morning
filled with rhythm and music from around the globe. A percussionist
extraordinaire, Judy will share drums from around the world and
introduce the group Mounira, offering exotic Near Eastern Music on a
variety of world instruments. Join us for a musical journey across
time and space.  A continental breakfast will be presented during the
performance. Sunday morning in Ojai, world music, coffee and tasty treats ... what a perfect way to end the festival!
